Stencil Art

Banksy

In Banksy's art, I see events and/or stories that reflect society and politics in different times. It will give an idea or a warning about what is happening in society. It left me surprised and shocked that our society is really like his work. His work contains messages like a warning sign that we shouldn't be doing this. because it is harmful to society. By creating a work that reflects or satirizes society, including graffiti techniques, it links with my ideas to create work in this genre.

Banksy uses the stencil technique to create works along with the graffiti style technique. There is a way of arranging shadows in a picture to create a dimension that makes the picture more realistic. Banksy displays work on a street, so creating his work requires working with the surrounding environment, for example, if there is a stair, he will arrange the composition of the image to create action along with it.

•I have an idea that I want to do a piece that satirizes society or reflects the negative events in the reality that may not be of much interest to people, but it is important that it should not be overlooked whether it is a political issue, social problems in school or social media problems. After looking into different aspects, I decided to focus on the issues related to gender or identity. Because I have a friend of mine who has problems with sexual identity, gay issues, and transexual. Unfortunately, in my country, most people don't accept the new idea, and people that are transexual are still bullied and judged as if transexual is a strange thing and funny. Sadly, when a friend came out to his father about his sexuality and then his father was angry and didn't accept that. After that when he came home, he had to act like a man in spite of what he truly wants to be and was very tried to act like ‘a normal man’ for 5 years. In my school, there are still have people who don't accept people as transexual or any sense of being different and think it is a clear example of discrimination and bullying.

Process

I choose to make collages first to create stories that I have witnessed and want to communicate in order to select areas that work as a symbolic images, like Banksy’s work. Then I will make a stencil.

I chose the background as the school as a representation of the society in a small scale, with authority that is not always performed with justice and demand on one idea that is considered as normal and therefore valuable rather than appreciating diversity.

The first incident will be the story of a boy convicted of being gay and being bullied by his peers.

And another case is that queer people are harassed even being stoned. The fact that queer people, transgender with more empathy, are persecuted as perverts because they are men wearing female clothes. I strongly believe that it is a matter of heart no matter what they wear.

Editing and selection

My collage art has a lot of events that communicate sexual identity or transexual issues, but I decide to choose this event because I just do not want to talk about gay issues. I want to talk about sexual identity and why people have to judge that do like this is this gender, For Example, those who play football or boxing must be man however a man who wears makeup must be a gay. And components of the image have groups that judge the kid wearing a crown to be gay, but the truth is this kid just likes to dress like this or like to wear a crown, why do people have to judge people from external?. And then I used photoshop and App stencil creator to make 5 layers for bringing to cut it out to make the final work.

I printed out 6 layers of paper and cut along the traces of the image I printed, then used acrylic paint to apply each layer using Brushes and sponges to keep tabs on the colors.   The bully’s face is dark to show their blinded, dark intentions

From a few experiments, I realized that I need to apply the following points to make the stencil technique to work.

•Photoshop the selected photo – simplify the image with 3- 4 color steps by adjusting brightness and shadow.  The image needs to show Highlights, mid-tones, and dark areas. Shadow determines the definition in your design.

•Cut accurately with  great detail

•choose colors that can show good contrast.

•Use masking tape to fix different plates in a right place

•Brushes are easier to control when working with detail

•Control the amount of paint – thin and even application

•Dap motion rather than swiping motion

In the first photo, the use of black and white combined with the gesture of a woman looking out of the window. Give me an impression that she's upset and wants something by looking out of the window and in front of the many colorful windows. This displays a feeling of chaos freedom and imagination with the technique. The Artist controls the tone of the image to stand out in black and white with clarity. It's a window with many different colors. And with the surroundings and the very colorful graffiti pattern, our perspective flows and goes to the focal point.

Martin Whatson

The colorful parts can represent the clearer’s dream however he swipes them away. He once was wanting to be someone who pursue his dream and was flexible with accepting new things but, now, he wants to give up all the positive changes.

Like Banksy, Martin Whatson uses stencils with Black and white. He also incorporates painting quality in his work, using spray paints like abstract art.

I want to use his technique of mixing muted tone stencil and colorful areas to create contrast and an effective focal point.

•My concept is drawn from my own story when I was about 15 years old. It is a period that requires many changes. Whether it is the need to find the source of one's own or preparing for college During that time, I would experience a lot of pressure from the people around me. When I want to find myself, I was often hit by an adult who ‘knows better’ and demands his way. For example, I want to be an artist but be seen by my neighbors or adults. Artists’ career seems to have less chance of success, insecure. Going to do something else like a doctor is more stable and richer. And adults tend to look at what teenagers want to do is nonsense. For example, I went to make art by drawing and spraying paint on the wall, But adults see it as sloppy, dirty, and no nonsense. But when famous adults do return admiration.

I made a series of collage works.  I make a story about school events that give students found themselves whether student like what or want to study what. I still choose a background that is Thai school and on the left is the event about students making artwork and then have a lot of students that pay attention but have Oldman that doesn't like it, he pressures students that making artwork, on the right side is the event about a kid that going to pay attention about art but his father wants him to go science club by force a kid and a kid that have Rubik cube head is a kid that dominates or control by someone.

I choose the Rubik head kid because it is the image that has action that easy to understand and it is powerful both emotional and stance. the first time that I choose I don't like the top body and then I find another image on the internet, and I got another kid that have a top body that I want but the stance of the first image has a stronger and more dissatisfied feeling than the second. The final version I bring both to mix by using photo-pea and lightroom to edit contrast and shadow.

After I get the last version, I start doing stencil by using photo-pea and stencil creator to edit color and layer until I get 6 layers and print out each layer to cut and prepare to do stencil work

this artwork gets concept based on my story that peers' pressure in high school caused this artwork. the Rubik head kid means The child who is forced or the child who is filled in to do that. Rubik's cube refers to a frame or something that is forced because the Rubik's cube has many forms of play to spin. But we have to play according to Rubik's rule, which is that no matter how much freedom we have to spin, in the end, we have to rotate all the colors back to the same order. So I chose to use Rubik's cube because no matter how free he thinks or wants to do it, in the end, he's forced by rules or whatever to keep him in order. And with the stance, the head bowing brings a feeling of sadness and stress.

Brexit mural

This is Banksy's work, the Brexit mural. Each star represents each country within the European Union.  I see someone breaking a star in the flag that represents the U.K., When I researched Brexit, I realized that it was an important and controversial event for the U.K. and the rest of the EU members because it has impacted the economy and politics. The U.K. withdrawing from the EU cause being in a European condition does more harm than benefit because the rules from the EU as a drag on the UK economy.

I am impressed with his thoughts because of his techniques for composing images where flags are used as focal points and stars, workers flow to link focal points. He used symbolic images such as the EU flag, chiseling out a star, and a worker as well as the choice of venue. He chose the British coastal city of Dover, a major transport hub for ferries to and from France and other European countries.

It made his work communicate stronger and clearer which allows his work to convey a message with greater intent and meaning. I learned from this work that selecting the place for display intentionally can contribute to communicating messages with a stronger impact.

During this shoot I learned that choosing a place to work in the arts wasn't easy, I had to find one place where when I do my artwork and it will have powerful and attractive people because the First time I start takes photos the wall, every wall that I took photos I feel it like a normal wall after that I saw Banksy Artwork that relates to Brexit. He chooses the place of artwork by choosing Dover because It is the entrance and exit that people from Europe, be it France, will pass here when entering or leaving the UK. and it makes his artwork have very powerful.

I choose this place to do my artwork because this place is near University and school and It's at the corner of the way to school and university and everyone that have to go to University or school will see it and social in university and school it still has bullied and judge people all gender and ages. I want my artwork to help and warn when people see it. I chose a public restroom because it relates to sex, nowadays many public toilets still have a gender divide between males and females, what about transgender, I do want not to have to define genders.

I chose ST Anselm's Catholic a large school with high-rise buildings and close to Simon Langton School and the area is close to the canterbury exit and there are villages where many adults live Thus because high school is a period time when young people decide to choose their future ways such as faculty or major in university or do work after high school. I do not want adults to define or control the future way for young people., in my work, there is a stronger and clearer communication about the issues that children are forced to or adults to control.
